DESCRIPTION
Cedric Gray's UTV accident could leave the Tennessee Titans without one of their best defensive players when they open the 2026 NFL season against the New York Jets. The Titans announced that Gray suffered a concussion and minor injuries in a UTV accident in Tennessee over the weekend. Gray will now have to clear the NFL's concussion protocol before he can return to the field, putting his Week 1 availability in question. For Tennessee, the timing couldn't be much worse. Gray enters the season as a starting linebacker and one of the Titans' most important young defensive players. Buck Reising explains why Gray's decision to put himself in a potentially risky situation during Labor Day weekend is frustrating even without all of the details surrounding the accident being publicly known. More importantly, what happens if Gray can't play against the Jets? Tennessee would have to reconsider its linebacker rotation around veteran Cody Barton, rookie Anthony Hill and James Williams. Barton brings experience and handles communication responsibilities as the Titans' green-dot defender, but losing Gray could create vulnerabilities elsewhere in the defense. That becomes particularly concerning against Jets running back Breece Hall. Without Gray, the Titans could face additional problems defending the run while also creating potential coverage mismatches involving running backs and tight ends. Tennessee already enters the season with very little margin for error, and losing one of its best defensive players could make an evenly matched Week 1 game significantly more difficult. There is still a chance Gray clears concussion protocol and is available against New York. His participation — or lack thereof — in practice throughout the week should provide a much clearer indication of his status. But regardless of whether Gray ultimately plays, Buck argues that the situation represents an unnecessary risk at one of the worst possible times. The Titans made it through training camp and the preseason relatively healthy. Now an off-field accident has the potential to affect their on-field product just days before the regular season begins. Buck Reising breaks down the latest on Cedric Gray, what his potential absence would mean for the Titans defense, how Tennessee could replace him at linebacker and why the Jets would have an obvious weakness to attack if Gray can't play.
